Everything You Need to Know About Home Mode

Posted June 10th, 2024 by SimpliSafe

Generally, when people think about home security, they assume it’s only necessary for when you’re away from home. Yet, there is often a need for security even when you’re at home.

These days, home security systems can go a long way in giving you peace of mind whether you’re home or away. Enter “Home Mode.” By arming your home security system, even when you’re home, you can rest assured that you will be alerted to whatever home hazard may occur.

What is “Home Mode”?

“Home Mode” is a SimpliSafe setting that allows you to arm your system even when you’re at home. By switching your system to Home Mode, it will arm all your sensors – with the exception of motion sensors, so that those won’t be triggered when you’re walking about the house – so that you will be alerted if someone tries to enter your home.

In Home Mode, your entry sensors, panic buttons, glass break sensors, and extra alarm sensors, are all armed. This lets you walk around your house and be protected without worrying about false alarms. Your cameras will also be shut off, but the privacy shutter will still open for alarm trigger events, which would happen in the case that the active alarms are tripped.

How Do You Arm Your System in Home Mode?

There are several ways to arm your system in Home Mode. The easiest is right through the keypad. Simply press the "Home" button on the keypad, and you’re all set!

You can also arm your system in home mode via your keychain remote. Press and hold the “Off” button on your keychain remote. While doing so, press the “Away” button. This will arm the system in Home Mode. You can do this outside your home when you leave or arm it in home mode from your bedroom as you go to sleep.

Are All Motion Sensors Shut Off in Home Mode?

What if you want to have a specific motion sensor armed in SimpliSafe’s Home Mode? For example, maybe you have a basement that you don’t visit often and always want to have the basement motion sensor armed.

What you can do in this case is to customize your system and set specific sensors that will still remain on, and you can do this for any of the modes. You can change the settings anytime through the SimpliSafe App.

The Difference Between Home Mode, Away Mode, and Off Mode

SimpliSafe offers three customizable modes you can choose from depending on how you want to arm your system. In addition to Home Mode, SimpliSafe offers:

  • Away Mode: Away mode is the go-to mode you’ll want to set your smart home security system to when you’re away from the house. In this default mode, all your alarms, including motion sensors, are active.

  • Off Mode:  Off mode’s default completely shuts off your system’s alarms, except for the panic button and the camera. While the camera will remain off and the privacy shutter closed during off mode, the privacy shutter will still open for alarm trigger events.

The Bottom Line

Home security systems are designed to keep you safe – whether you’re home or away. With SimpliSafe’s customizable modes, you have complete control over how your system functions and when. Shop now to get started building your system today.
